Rams’ Gurley takes snaps with first-string offense
St. Louis Rams Coach Jeff Fisher dropped some fairly big hints Tuesday that rookie running back Todd Gurley could make his National Football League debut Sunday against the Washington Redskins.
Fisher said Monday the news was better than expected on both players, who were injured in the opening 34-31 overtime win against the Seattle Seahawks.
There’s no doubt Gurley is excited to make his Rams debut, and that excitement grows as he passes each milepost in the final stages of his rehab from knee surgery at Georgia.
The addition of Gurley to the field, even in limited plays, and the return of Tre Mason, would help the running game, which was had to get by against Seattle with Benny Cunningham and Isaiah Pead. “We’ll see how he does, but this is a medical decision, a trainer’s decision, a collective decision”. I wake up hyped to get the opportunity.
“I definitely would want to be playing, but I know it’s going to be a long journey”, Gurley said. The Redskins held the Dolphins to 74 yards rushing, and will likely try to have a similar run defense set up against the Rams.
“I’m not concerned about him knowing what to do whatsoever”, Fisher said. It was a bit of a surprise that he did not make the active roster for the opener.
“There’s always that possibility”, said Fisher, via ESPN.
“I think that was my first game that I’ve ever missed [due to injury] in my career and so that really hurt me”, Mason said. The Rams are experimenting with the practice week schedule, taking Thursday off instead of Tuesday the first two weeks.
That’s what Jeff Fisher said regarding Gurley’s status.
Mason, who has been out since injuring his hamstring in Week 3 of the preseason, mentioned he had thoughts of playing last week against Seattle, but felt the rest would provide better results for him. Sims went down late in the game on Sunday with a knee/ankle injury.
