Former Who’s The Boss? Child Star Danny Pintauro Reveals He’s HIV-Positive
The 39-year-old former Who’s the Boss star also talked about his crystal meth use and how he was forced to reveal he’s gay back in 1997.
Pintauro, 39, told Winfrey he wanted to share his health status “a long time ago”, but wasn’t ready.
“I’m HIV-positive. And I have been for 12 years”, Pintauro shared on Saturday night’s episode of “Oprah: Where Are They Now?“.
The beloved former child star appeared on a “Where Are They Now” segment.
The actor, who portrayed Jonathan on the family sitcom for eight years, opened the Q&A by coming right out with this troubling piece of information.
Daniel – who came out as homosexual publically in 1997 – went for regular six-month check-ups because he was “terrified of the idea of getting HIV”.
Pintauro later expanded on his point, telling US magazine People, “I want my community to wake up, stop being complacent and start taking care of each other”. He noted that he already “missed the opportunity to be a beacon of light for gay kids who were going through what I was going through because I was outed”. “I went in for a regular checkup”, Pintauro explains.
“Crystal meth takes away your inhibitions, you have no limits”.
After two-year relationship, Pintauro says he became more sexually adventurous and began using meth.
“[After being diagnosed] there’s this very bad feeling of I’m never going to be able to have a good relationship, no one’s ever gonna want me …” At the time, he said he was “completely clueless” that he had the virus.
“It’s backwards. You’ve spent so much time terrified that you’re going to get it, and then you have it. You don’t have to be terrified anymore”, Danny said. Pintauro graduated from Stanford University and married Wil Tabares in a same-sex marriage ceremony recently.
