Huskers Survive Southern Miss. 36-28
Miami would kick a field goal to get the victory that they were seeking.
The missed opportunities did come back to play a factor in the game. Four of the seven Southern Miss drives in the first half ended in punts, one ended in a fumble and the only points they could have produced, Parker Shaunfield botched the field goal. He’s averaging almost three touchdowns a game and over 300 yards passing a game. He also ran for 63 yards and a score. Armstrong’s touchdown dash came one play after Janovich appeared to have scored a 15-yard touchdown of his own. If Southern Miss gets the ball back with a few minutes left, who knows? Akinmoladun said he planned to spend a good portion of Sunday breaking down the Southern Miss game with Collins. In addition, the big plays remained a problem for the Huskers defense.
Westerkamp caught 11 passes for 118 yards, setting a career high for receptions. The Huskers then milked as much time off the clock as they could, after having another Westerkamp touchdown pass wiped off the board by a penalty.
But on the last play of the game, defensive lineman Freedom Akinmoladun notched his second sack of the game, throwing Mullens for an eight-yard loss to help Nebraska improve to 2-2.
Coming off its second loss of the season, the Penn State women’s soccer team tied Nebraska Friday night, 1-1, in Lincoln. Miss. was able to quickly complete two passes to get in a position to throw a Hail Mary and tie the game.
Reilly’s average gain per catch: 19.8 yards.
Today’s Nebraska vs Southern Mississippi college football game has a start time schedule of noon EST and airs on TV channel ESPNEWS and can also be viewed on the live stream online. Terrell Newby led the Big Red with 18 carries for 76 yards. Nebraska Cornhuskers, on the other hand, ranks No. 7 in rushing offense at home with 305.6 yards. He went 4-for-4 with field goals of 27, 40, 22 and 50 yards.
State holiday: Nobody has to go to work on Monday because Nebraska called a fullback trap. Those drive stalls allowed the Golden Eagles to stay within striking distance. Keeper Britt Eckerstrom (Germantown, Md.) dove and deflected the ball, but the ball bounced across the goal line to give Nebraska the 1-0 lead. USM took advantage with a 17-yard touchdown run by Ito Smith just 1:41 into the second half.
ABOUT SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI (2-1): Jalen Richard became the first Golden Eagle since Austin Davis in 2010 to score four rushing touchdowns and exploded for a career-high 230 yards against the Bobcats, earning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week honors. But Southern Miss made a late run, scoring three touchdowns in the final quarter to cut the Husker lead to eight.
Mullens and Martin connected for a 21-yard touchdown, Xavier Thigpen recovered the onside kick and Martin turned a short pass into a 19-yard TD on fourth-and-4 to make it 29-21.
It was the ideal mix then, something from Nebraska’s past on the runs and something from Nebraska’s new staff’s past on the pass. The Huskers haven’t felt a whole lot like a “melding of styles” through four games, but Janovich’s big Saturday certainly did.
