South Africa recalls Albie Morkel to replace injured Wiese for T20 series
Big Proteas names like AB de Villiers (ODI captain), Hashim Amla (Test skipper), Faf du Plessis (T20 captain) touched Delhi from Johannesburg in the afternoon on Sunday.
Meanwhile, all-rounder Albie Morkel has been recalled in the South African T20 worldwide (T20I) side as pacer David Wiese is out of the tour with a hand fracture.
He will replace injured David Wiese. Albie, who played the last of his 49 T20Is against India at the 2014 World T20, was to captain Northerns in the Africa T20 Cup.
Morkel on the other hand will have a chance to feature in his 50th T20I for South Africa, with his last appearance in the format coming in April 2014. “He has done really well”, said du Plessis. I suppose Albie would have thought his time is up, once again, but he is getting another opportunity because he is a quality player.
Rossouw was initially named in One-Day worldwide squad after the selectors were happy with his progress.
A strong South African Twenty20 squad with a judicious blend of youth and experience will open their campaign in a 72-day long tour, when they take on a talented bunch of India A youngsters in a T20 warm-up game, here on Monday.
Proteas team manager, Mohammed Moosajee, gave clarity on the injuries at the squad’s departure press conference held at OR Tambo global airport on Saturday afternoon.
“The medical committee have decided its still too early for him (Rossouw) to be pushed at this stage”.
To complete a lengthy fitness bulletin ahead of the team’s departure to India, Chris Morris was given the all-clear after coming through three T20 warm-up matches for his franchise, the Titans, having recovered from the groin strain which hampered him in Bangladesh. The visitors will head for Dharamsala, the venue for the first T20 after playing their practice game against India A at the Airforce ground in Palam.
