New Jersey Community Mourning After High School Football Player Dies After
A short time later, he collapsed on the sidelines.
The death of Murray and Hamm follow the death of Franklin Parrish (Winnsboro, La.) player Tyrell Cameron in a September 4 game in Louisiana.
Witnesses said Murray felt “woozy” after the tackle but tried reassuring his teammates he would be fine as he was lifted on a gurney and taken to a hospital. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Faith Discovery Church on Brass Castle Road in Washington Township, Warren County, with a viewing from noon to 9 p.m. the day before at the same location, according to the funeral home.
A three-year starter for the football team, Murray also played baseball and basketball at Warren Hills.
An autopsy was planned for Saturday, but the results had not been made public as of late Sunday afternoon. Bowen declined to take questions from reporters, saying a cause of death has not yet been determined.
“He tried giving a thumbs-up to the rest of the team, and all of us cheered”, said Kaitlin Bell, 16, a junior varsity cheerleader. “We will have continuing counseling available at Summit High School on Monday for our staff”. “We didn’t expect anything would happen”.
Chang e-mailed the Summit community on Saturday morning to inform them that he, along with Kostibos, Lockhart, and Director of Guidance Laura Kaplan, had met with the football team during the morning hours to offer support.
Murray’s teammates didn’t find out about his death until after the game, a 14-12 loss to Summit High School. So in the case of retiring his jersey number, I say “Let the student body vote”.
Classmate and friend Taylor Coughlin, a junior who appears to have set up a GoFundMe page to assist the family, told NJ.com that Murray was an “amazing kid”. A kind leader, a fierce student, a loyal friend, and composed athlete who will be greatly missed by our Warren Hills Community. “He stood out in his athletics, his academics – everything”.
