Emilio Estefan Releases ‘We’re All Mexican’ Song in Honor of Hispanic Heritage
The video isn’t meant to attack the current Republican front-runner; it is designed to “lift up our pride and show the world what we’re doing”, according to Estefan.
“I saw a lot of negativity about Hispanics”, said Estefan. A full 70 percent of Latinos polled by Marist/MSNBC/Telemundo last week said they had a negative view of Trump, a number that’s consistent with polls from earlier in the summer.
When Estefan originally announced the release of the song, many quickly believed it was a response to Donald Trump’s controversial comments about Mexican immigrants.
“There’s a message being sent out to the world where people are giving opinions that are plain wrong”, the 19 Grammy award-winning producer said.
Unfortunately, the most you’ll get out of this is that Mexico gave us the best frijoles and lip-smacking guacamole in all the land.
“I think the contributions range from people in the Army to celebrities”.
Estefan rounded up dozens of Hispanic artists to record the track, which he describes as a way to honor and celebrate accomplishments within their culture.
“It’s about the American dream, not changing your name, not changing your sound, ” Estefan said.
The song is not available for commercial purposes, however the video can be watched on YouTube.
Estefan recruited a celebrity cast of entertainment friends for the video, which also includes non-Latinos such as comedians Kathy Griffin and Whoopi Goldberg, who say “We love America” and “Todos unidos”. Mexicans are being vilified in the United States by some of the media and political leaders and in some of the public’s sentiment because they comprise 67% of the Latino population and because their native country shares a direct border with the United States and are the majority of the “Latino” crossing that particular border. “It’s about the celebration of Hispanic Heritage and how lucky we are to be in America”.
