Tsonga beats Simon for record 3rd Open de Moselle title
The two 30-year-olds faced each other for the second time in a final here on Sunday, reports Efe.
Both won in straight sets on Saturday, with Simon beating Martin Klizan of Slovakia 6-4, 6-4 and Tsonga easing past Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 6-3, 6-4 to set up a replay of the 2013 final which Simon won.
Tsonga had a disappointing Wimbledon display in 2015, but he did manage a semi-final appearance at the French Open – losing to eventual champion Stan Wawrinka – and also reached the last eight at the US Open earlier this month.
Previous year David Goffin ended a run of five consecutive titles for Frenchmen in Metz when he defeated Joao Sousa in the final.
The third seed, who sent down 13 aces and made 34 winners in total, required just an hour and nine minutes to set up the showpiece match against his compatriot, their second final clash at this tournament in three years. Simon given him within the northeastern community in 2010 and 2013, with the use of Tsonga profitable in 2011 and 2012.
The first set went with serve as both players saved a number of break points before Tsonga edged the tie break.
“I am very happy, it was a big first set”, said Tsonga.
