Brady joins 400 club
Eight plays later, Brady tossed his 400th career touchdown pass, a one-yarder to Danny Amendola to put the Patriots up 20-3.
New England then dug the Jaguars into a coffin, garnering 57 yards on eight plays in just 1:29, their drive concluding in a two-yard touchdown connection between Brady and Amendola to end the first half.
The Patriots played the Jaguars, so Brady – who entered the game with 399 TD tosses – reaching the milestone was all but assured to take place this Sunday.
The New England Patriots obliterated the Jacksonville Jaguars, 51-17, on Sunday, and improved to 3-0 for the ninth time in team history – the fifth time since Bill Belichick became head coach in 2000.
Running back LeGarrette Blount solidified the Patriots’ lead with three rushing touchdowns of his own. There were notable contributions from Kevin Faulk, Jabar Gaffney, Donté Stallworth, and Benjamin Watson, but none of them could take over a game. Belichick said Brady and Gostkowksi’s milestones speak to their longevity, durability and consistency.
“I don’t care whether we throw it in or run it in”, Brady said afterward. “I think everyone enjoyed it. It was a good performance by our offense, a good team win”.
Darren Sproles sparked the Eagles with an 89-yard punt return for a score and added a 1-yard touchdown run, the defense caused four turnovers and Philadelphia got its first win of the season by holding on to beat the New York Jets 24-17 on Sunday. The Jags host the Indianapolis Colts next week while the Patriots have an early bye before visiting Dallas and Indianapolis.
Brady completed 33 of 42 passes for 358 yards and two touchdowns. “You always want to play”, Blount said. We only had three safeties that were active and two of them got hurt. On offense, the Patriots displayed a balance between the passing game and the running game that hadn’t been seen all season.
There were practically no mistakes made by the Patriots, save possibly for a mix-up in coverage between Malcolm Butler and Duron Harmon that resulted in Allen Hurns’ 59-yard TD pass from Blake Bortles with 6:15 left in the third quarter.
Jordan Spieth capped a brilliant season in sensational style as he scored a four-stroke victory at the Tour Championship on Sunday that also won him the FedExCup playoffs title for an $11.48-million pay day.
Peyton Manning entered play Sunday with 533 touchdown passes, the all-time record, while now injured Drew Brees sits just behind Brady with 398 touchdown passes. Considering the overall play of the Jaguars defense, the Patriots did poorly to not get into the end zone every time instead of kicking field goals.
“I feel very fortunate to have coached, had guys like that on our team, and those two guys in particular… they had a good day, as they’ve had for many, many, many days in their career”. Like Atlanta, like Carolina, Arizona – there’s some teams that, OK, you wouldn’t really expect that. It was also Brady’s NFL-record 31st start in which his team scored 40-plus points.
Rob Gronkowski gets tackled in the first quarter. Gronkowski caught four passes for 101 yards, his 17th 100-yard game, extending his National Football League record for 100-yard games by a tight end. When compared to the likes of Julio Jones (34 catches), Antonio Browns (29) and A.J. Green (18), Robinson’s number of catches are easily below the norm through three games.
Jacksonville was also flagged seven times for 114 yards, including back-to-back pass interference penalties in the third quarter.
Against the Jaguars, he was routinely pushing the offensive line backward before the opposition could even hand the ball off. Just watch the Patriots’ defensive line. I thought the players did a good job of that.
