Mourinho blasts Chelsea performance
Ayoze Perez and Georginio Wijnaldum had put Newcastle 2-0 up, but substitute Ramires got Jose Mourinho’s side back into the game at the hour-mark.
Asmir Begovic was called into action shortly after, saving from both Perez and Daryl Janmaat as Newcastle continued to press. The only important thing in the end was that Newcastle could not keep it out, and it saved Chelsea from embarrassment.
Branislav Ivanovic yet again features for Chelsea despite another poor showing against Walsall on Wednesday night. William’s delivery made me smile.
“You could see a determination in the players”.
A massive improvement from his performance against Watford last weekend, the Newcastle captain was the leader his side needed.
However, a stunning long-range strike from Ramires sparked a comeback, before Willian found the net with a free-kick which deceived goalkeeper Tim Krul. “In the first half, from 0 to 10, [Chelsea were] -1”.
STEVE McClaren has revealed he is not about to change his approach to transforming Newcastle United despite a awful start to the season.
Maybe he was still brooding over the retrospective ban handed to Diego Costa this week. “You need that target man to play off and we had one who was a constant threat to the Chelsea back four along with Perez”, said McClaren. I was surprised with the quality of their play. We looked a team. “That was more like it”.
“That’s the benchmark. We’ve shown the standard in terms of attitude”. It was a good time to score, just before half time.
His opposite number, Jose Mourinho, criticised his players after making a sluggish start.
Newcastle took the lead in the first half when Ayoze Perez controlled Vurnon Anita’s cross and volleyed in off the post from 15 yards out.
RAMIRES: He was only on for 17 minutes but he revolutionised the match, and it is a pity that he and his compatriot Willian did not start the match because the result may have been different. The second half was really good.
“We got a point that was not what we wanted but it was not too bad”.
Charnley continued: “After six league games the truth is we have not achieved the points that any of us had hoped and expected we would do”. “Poor individual performances and it was impossible to be a competitive team”.
