Spieth Leads Tour Championship

Danny Lee has put an exclamation mark on his breakthrough US PGA Tour season, surging to a second-placed finish at the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

Spieth knew a fifth win of the season at East Lake would guarantee him the overall title and the 22-year-old didn’t disappoint, with a one-under 69 enough to secure a $10m payout, on top of the first prize of $1.485m (£977,000) for the Tour Championship win.

At age 22, Jordan Spieth became the first $22-million man in golf Sunday.

Spieth’s final-round one-under 69 easily got the job done as his closest pursuers – most notably former FedEx Cup champ Henrik Stenson – stalled in the final round.

Given Spieth, Stenson and Fowler are all guaranteed the FedEx Cup and its $US10million bonus should they win the tournament, Day’s hopes rest on what would have to be a brilliant final round.

The tournament victory, Spieth’s fifth of the year – including two majors – was worth $1,485,000 and allowed the Texan to set a PGA Tour record with $12,030,465 in winnings.

Two holes later, Spieth rolled in 46-foot putt for birdie to retain his two-shot edge, drawing a wry grin from the Swede who acknowledged the American’s effort with a fist bump on the green.

“I got to work, put my head down a little more than I did right after the PGA, knowing that we could still peak this week and that’s what we did”.

New Zealand’s Danny Lee, England’s Justin Rose, and Stenson shared second place at five under. “Mentally I stayed in it, and boy, that putter sure paid off”.

“I got frustrated. I missed two cuts in a row, which I’d never done before and I lost the No1 ranking”. For other golfers, it may be scary to think that Spieth is just getting started, as he finally had a chance to reflect on all he’s accomplished.

“His putting and mental focus is the best in the world“.

“This is incredible”, Spieth said.

That three-putt hole seemed to jolt Spieth into action, and he coaxed his famed putter to start behaving properly. He posted four bogeys and two birdies for a 72. Since the PGA Tour has been around, nobody has had a more financially profitable season than Jordan Spieth in 2014-15.

Paul Casey made bogey from the bunker on the 18th for a 70 and was four shots behind, and British Open champion Zach Johnson birdied three of his last four holes to overcome a double bogey on the par-5 ninth.

“I’m very motivated”, he said.
