Samsung to Shutter Milk Video Service in November
Samsung would be shuttering down its video discovery app – Samsung Milk Video – on November 20. Announced through Google Play, Samsung said that although it’s committed to providing premium entertainment services, the Korean company will no longer provide support for its Milk Video app. The service’s closure comes just 12 months after launching.
Milk Video is a mobie-focused service that aggregates videos from other video services such as YouTube and Vevo.
Initially Milk Video was only available for select Samsung smartphones before the app was pre-loaded on all new flagship devices from the company. Samsung also agreed deals for exclusive content from the likes of amusing Or Die and Vice, but it was clearly insufficient to attract viewers away from established rival services.
The shutdown date would have been the service’s first birthday, The Verge reported, adding that Milk has found it hard to make waves in the streaming video space. Variety broke the news in May 2015 of layoffs at Samsung’s content unit, only a few weeks after Swint left the company all together. Users were informed Monday that the app may disappear from their phone with an upcoming software update.
