Audience Member Attempts to Charge Phone at Hand to God
“The whole time it was very weird”, stated Chris York, who was sitting in the mezzanine section during the time of the incident.
But theater etiquette might have taken a turn for the freakish on Broadway last week with a dead cellphone.
Mr York wasn’t the only person to take to social media with his outrage, with main cast member Sarah Stiles venting on Twitter after the show.
According to the New York Post, the crew had to stop the pre-show music and make an announcement to the audience that that sort of thing isn’t allowed. But the non-working outlet was just part of the production’s set, Playbill.com reports.
A patron at the Tony Award-nominated play “Hand to God” on July 2 climbed onstage just before the show began to try to recharge his phone in what looked like an outlet.
You read that right – the man jumped onto the stage and plugged his phone in to charge on the actual set – in a fake socket.
What was worse was that the man had to leap onto the stage, then walk about 15 feet to get to the outlet.
Security guards were not far behind and returned the audience member to his seat.
Hand to God has been called an “irreverent puppet comedy… about a possessed Christian-ministry puppet”.
