The organisation’s clean vehicles manager, Greg Archer, said: “The Volkswagen scandal was just the tip of the iceberg”.
The VW cheating scandal prompted the resignation of the automaker’s chief executive, Martin Winterkorn.
This comes after VW, the biggest carmaker in the world, admitted cheating on emissions tests in the US. “Challenges and solutions from Volkswagen’s perspective” on Wednesday at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. “The defeat device was specifically created to ensure that vehicles would pass inspection”, the agency says on its website.
Prosecutors are hoping to determine where the responsibility lies for the alleged manipulated emission tests, prosecutors in Braunschweig, Germany, said Monday in an email statement. The company has apologized, but has not yet detailed who was responsible for the defeat devices. Prosecutors have received a number of criminal complaints in the case, including one from Volkswagen itself that doesn’t name any suspects.
It said the move could affect 180,000 cars – not yet sold or registered – in the Euro5 emission category. The models in question belong to the A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, TT, Q3 and Q5 lineups.
In a statement, it said vehicles that have 1.2-litre 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre diesel engines of VW models – including VW’s Audi, Seat and Skoda brands – could be affected.
Details on what cars are involved have emerged gradually.
The increased oversight is a response to the discovery earlier this month that Volkswagen was using sophisticated software to cheat on pollution tests on 482,000 diesel vehicles sold in the U.S.
But the group called on European Union governments to broaden their probes into the “defeat devices” to cover gasoline cars as well.
The EPA says some states require proof that emissions recalls have been fixed before license plates are renewed.
