Police training cut due to budget crisis
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White has announced that vehicle registration renewal reminder notices will not be mailed to citizens, due to the lack of a state budget.
The SICJTP receives 75% of its funding $400,000 yearly budget from the state of Illinois Traffic and Criminal Convictions Surcharge Fund, Norrington said.
Additionally, White says that he will be unable to mail required annual licenses to auto dealers if the postage account runs out in January.
Without spending authority, White said his office is facing the prospect of bills no longer being paid. He also worries that utilities could be shut off at the state Capitol in Springfield.
White’s office will meet with folks in the governor’s office later this week to talk temporary fixes.
The prospect of mounds of garbage surrounding one of the state’s most historic buildings comes as much of state government continues to operate via court orders and agreements between Rauner and the Democrats who control the Legislature.
And, he told the chief executive and lawmakers, without a budget he can not indefinitely keep open the Capitol complex, which includes about 20 buildings.
“We are dealing effectively with similar operational issues at agencies throughout state government and are happy to provide Secretary White with assistance in finding solutions to his office’s challenges”, Walters said. We may have had the worst credit rating of any state, an incalculable pension problem and, at the time, almost the highest unemployment in the nation, but at least things weren’t as bad as in Washington.
Rauner has said Illinois needs to overhaul workers’ compensation and to limit collective bargaining to spur economic growth. She didn’t specify further.
“He is calling on majority Democrats to support his legislative agenda or “immediately” pass their own balance budget”, Gov. Rauner said in a press release.
The first-term governor has said he wants business and union reforms in conjunction with a state budget, but Democratic legislators say they’ve considered measures Rauner wants in several overtime sessions.
Democrats are trying to pressure Rauner and other Republicans to sign off on a tax increase to help close a multibillion-dollar deficit.
