Deal runs for 2 TDs, No. 22 Wisconsin beats Hawaii 28-0
“You’ve got to kind of ride what you’re doing well, and that was working for us (Saturday)”. “Everybody told me I needed to get bigger mentally and physically”.
“Ready or not, here it comes”.
Schobert continues to lead a Badgers defense that is fiercely protective of its home turf.
Defensively, the front seven dominated, holding the Warriors to just 36 yards on the ground, not counting the 21 yards lost on three Max Wittek sacks and a rushing attempt. The victory was the Badgers’ third in a row in as many weeks at Camp Randall Stadium.
ABOUT WISCONSIN (2-1): Stave has completed passes to 12 players this season with senior Alex Erickson (14 catches, 16.6 average, one touchdown) the most frequent target and junior wide receiver Robert Wheelwright (three TDs) and tight end Austin Traylor combining for five scores.
■ Schobert entered the night No. 3 nationally in tackles for loss (71/2) and tied for fifth in sacks (four).
24 – That’s how many wins Joel Stave has as the starting quarterback at Wisconsin. A handful of penalties during the series derailed momentum, and kicker Rigoberto Sanchez missed a 49-yard field goal on Hawaii’s best chance to put points on the scoreboard. Both are not the caliber of teams that the coaching staff would like to measure success against, I believe that they just need to get things rolling. “We play with toughness. We have to be disciplined”.
The redshirt freshman ran hard all night, finishing with 147 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.
Deal gained 56 yards on nine rushes during that first drive and was over the 100-yard mark by halftime.
The team jokes with Deal at times about running up the back of his blocker or not even following him, trying to create his own hole.
Despite the leaning tower of negativity above, I think there is reason for optimism. That’s good to see. Ogunbowale, not wanting to be outdone, also got a whiff of the end zone in the fourth quarter when he ran nine yards for a touch with 7:29 left to play.
The 32 was also utilized on Deal’s second touchdown of the afternoon in the second quarter.
After the first quarter, the Wisconsin defense had allowed -10 rushing yards.
Hawaii quarterback Max Wittek was 8-for-17 in the first half, totaling 101 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Hawaii (2-2) has now been shut out twice on the road against Big Ten opponents, losing two weeks ago at Ohio State, 38-0. He saw limited action with eight carries in Wisconsin’s loss to Alabama. Talent in the end will win out and Wisconsin sure does have a lot of it. The Badgers ranked in the top 40 the last three years in recruiting, according to ESPN.
The Wisconsin Badgers will now turn its attention to next week, where they will finally begin conference play when they host the Iowa Hawkeyes (4-0) at Camp Randall Stadium at 11:00 am Eastern. The offense can’t count on another all-time great performance from the defense like they did against Ohio State again.
