LG takes on Apple MacBook Air with its Gram super-thin laptops
When it comes to laptops, you might think of brands like Dell, Acer, Lenovo, ASUS, Samsung, Alienware, Apple, and etc. However, it’s not often that one might associate laptops with LG, although the South Korean manufacturer does make them but for the most part, they tend to be available in overseas markets like its home country.
The main selling points of the Gram don’t actually have much to do with Microsoft’s new operating system – there’s no touchscreen option or RealSense camera for Windows Hello. The prices are certainly competitive, beginning at $899 for a 13-inch version with a Core i5 chip, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive.
An instant boot feature powers up the laptop as soon as the screen is lifted, whether the computer is powered off or in sleep mode. But as already mentioned, LG may not be known for laptops but their displays are some of the best in the world, and that’s true with the Gram series.
The Gram’s body is made of carbon-lithium and carbon-magnesium, the same materials found in spacecraft and race cars. “With Intel Core processors delivering a balance of performance, rich graphics and great battery life, we think the LG gram series is a compelling new offering for consumers”. It also comes with a built-in HDMI port, which is uncommon among laptops of this size, which generally require HDMI adaptors.
The name “Gram” can be pertained to the rather impressive weight of the laptop. For $1399, you can get a 14-inch laptop with a 2.4GHz Intel Core i7-5500U processor and 256GB of storage. The FullHD displays feature 16:9 aspect ratio, in-plane switching (IPS) technology, and a Reader Mode that reduces blue light for more comfortable reading over extended periods of time.
The Gram goes on sale today, and is available at Microsoft’s online and retail stores, as well as from Amazon.
