Warren: Much left to do 50 years after Civil Rights Act
“And, in a few cities, white vigilantes with weapons freely walk the streets”, Warren said.
Best-selling author and Columbia University professor John McWhorter has exposed the major flaws in the Black Lives Matter movement, asserting that the group is “living in the past” and pointing out that America won’t actively engage in the group’s demands as long as they continue to ignore the fact “that black people in poor neighborhoods are in vastly more danger of being killed by young black men than by the occasional bad cop”.
Black Lives Matter leaders say the marathon is an appropriate place to air their calls for social justice.
Returning to Warren, she also seeks to stoke the fires of racial division – a sure victor for Democrats in an election year – by invoking all sorts of dire images without providing any context for them and how they are resolved.
In Boston, local activists are applauding Warren’s speech.
Sen. Warren made a good effort to link various forms of oppression, including racial injustice and economic injustice, and to make connections between injustice 50 years ago and what is happening today. Owning a home won’t stop someone from burning a cross on the front lawn. In other words, the way she navigates the predicament of emphasizing race or class in her analysis of America’s greatest ills is by opting out of choosing. She keeps the goal of that race locked in her sights.
“Fifty years later, violence against African Americans has not disappeared”, she said.
“We ask for your patience as we work on this, and want to reiterate that your safety is our highest priority”, the organizers said in a statement. “Medgar Evers. Emmett Till”, she said. “This is America, not a war zone-and policing practices in all cities-not just some-need to reflect that”.
Warren also offered that policing must become a community endeavor, with police forces looking like the neighborhoods they serve, working with the community, equipped with body cameras and trained to de-escalate and avoid violence.
– Two weeks after Black Lives Matter shut down the light rail before a Minnesota Vikings game, the group announced their plans for a similar protest during the Twins Cities Marathon next month.
Today, the specific tools of oppression have changed-voter I.D. laws, racial gerrymandering, and mass disfranchisement through a criminal justice system that disproportionately incarcerates black citizens. There was an absence of a full-throated repudiation of “broken windows” policing – the popular policing model of swarming communities with police officers and aggressively pursuing fines and arrests for minor infractions. “The first civil rights battles were hard fought”. She argued that their movement would not succeed in changing deep-seated racism.
Civil rights, asserted Warren, introduced new laws that ensured that, “Black lives matter”. The last topic is the one that has ensured her rise to political superstardom, and this is where her analysis is most incisive.
But then, Republicans’ trickle-down economic theory arrived.
Today, 90% of Americans see no real wage growth. Her speech was so powerful and encapsulated the issues close to the Black Lives Matter movement so well that The Washington Post’s Wesley Lowery wrote, “At times, Warren’s speech read as if it could have been authored by the activists themselves”.
“This is the reality all of us must confront, as uncomfortable and ugly as that reality may be”, explained the senator.
