‘The Martian,’ Movie About Man Abandoned On Mars Lauded By NASA Astronaut
Matt Damon regrets not keeping hold of his spacesuit from “The Martian”.
Scott no longer has that avante garde visual style he possessed when making Alien or Blade Runner, but he still excels not just at arresting the eye, but suggesting a world that’s greater than the one in the frame.
The Martian, starring Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain, is set to land in cinemas on the 30th of September and we’ve got goodies to celebrate. Seamlessly switching back and forth between Watney’s complications on Mars and NASA’s dilemmas in Houston, Scott doesn’t stray off path of the film’s narrative: the survival and rescue of Watney. Believe it or not…I think that it can.
Les Johnson, from Marshall Space Flight Center, said that the creators of the movie did an excellent job in simulating something that they might actually achieve in the very near future. He contrasts the loneliness of Mars with the bustle of mission control at NASA (which, incidentally, is a beautifully-designed set); the gritty, stifling dust storms howling outside Watney’s enclave with the pristine silence of the Hermes. So I did and posted it to my site.
The stars were out in full force for the European premiere of The Martian. And, he said, he was very happy that the film has an global focus as people from all backgrounds team together to rescue Damon’s character. Drew Goddard, who wrote the screenplay, called me nearly every day while he was working on it. And when he had his first draft done he sent it to me to get feedback, and he made some changes based on my feedback and ignored other changes because it’s his screenplay. He comes to, alone on a planet indifferent to his existence, and presumes he’s simply going to die. Knowing this, Mark Watney (Matt Damon) must get to work and “science the shit” out of a planet where nothing grows and his only “company” is the abundance of disco music left by his commander, …
Everyone in the film is excellent, in fact, including Kristen Wiig as a NASA PR woman with an impossible story to spin and Sean Bean as the boss who puts his people ahead of the budget.
“I’ve never really seen anybody do something like that quite as effectively as he does”, Damon said.
How different is the movie from your version?
As always, let me now double back for a quick summary of what The Martian is about, in case you’ve been ignoring this section all the previous times.
“Ben and I had an idea that we would do it more like “Unforgiven” – which was the anti-western”. As an audience member I’m like, oh, look at Trainwreck and Spy! Once the book was done, people started requesting that I make an e-book version so they didn’t have to read it in a web browser. What do you guys think of her look? But the film, to its credit, feels no need to wow us with futuristic gadgets on the Earth side of things.
The HBO programme selects a first-time director to make a feature film.
“The Martian” is slated to hit theaters on October. 2 alongside “Sicario” and “Freeheld”. “It wasn’t a character I could relate to at all”, she said. Now I gotta split my money with the exhibitor, so do I think this movie about this relationship kind of falling apart is going to make $100 million so that I can break even? “Ultimately, he just did it himself by doing such wonderful work, and now it’s just kind of accepted that he’s wonderful and talented and all the things I know him to be”.
