Run the Jewels ‘Meow the Jewels’ (album stream)
The reign of El P and Killer Mike won’t stop and the further their winning ways, the dynamic duo has released Meow The Jewels. With excellent titles like Paw Due Respect and All Meow Life, the album is a breeding ground for cat puns but it’s also actually really, really good. To the pet purist it might seem like cheating to work with kitty sounds in the studio until they’re barely recognizable, but credit to Just Blaze, Zola Jesus, BOOTS, and all the other contributors for realizing there’s more than one way to skin a cat.
The album, which includes remixes of tracks from last year’s “Run The Jewels 2” by the likes of Massive Attack’s 3D and Geoff Barrow of Portishead, was previewed last week with ‘Oh My Darling Don’t Meow’ and ‘Meowrly’. The download is available here and the limited edition vinyl (with a fur cover!) drops in November.
“The cat-encrusted instrumentals clearly differ sporadically from Run the Jewels” usual bass-jockeyed beats and serve as conceptual interpretations from each guest-producer.
“Did we make the silliest, occasionally most grating possible remix album?” says El-P.
Meow The Jewels is an odd sonic dwelling where obsessive cat culture, rap culture and supporters of justice collide. It’s everything Run The Jewels stands for. It’s not a cat version of RTJ2, it’s a remix album of RTJ2… with cats.
