Community mourns death of HS football star
Evan Murray of Warren Hills Regional High School in New Jersey was injured during a match against Summit High School on Friday night.
Murray, 17, was a dominant pitcher on the Blue Streaks’ baseball team, the starting quarterback in football since his sophomore year and a good basketball player.
School district officials expressed sorrow but offered few details as of Saturay morning.
Grief counselors were at the school over the weekend, and students, coaches and community members gathered for a memorial there.
Murray was hit in the backfield, but was able to get to the sideline of his own power, according to NJ.com. The cause has yet to be announced or stated as we write this but the Warren Hills community is in shock-and mourning.
“There are a lot of things I’m going to remember about Evan, mostly his leadership and the young gentleman that he was”, Quinto said.
“He is an fantastic kid”, said Taylor Coughlin, a 16-year-old junior at Warren Hills Regional High School.
“He was one of the best leaders”, said Veneziano, who noted that Murray was honest and levelheaded.
“As the mother of high school senior”. “On behalf of all the people of New Jersey, Mary Pat and I send our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the Murray family on the loss of Evan”, tweeted Christie.
A GoFundMe page set up to benefit his family and had already raised nearly $35,000 as of Sunday afternoon.
At the end of the game, teammates emerged from the locker room and said Murray may have suffered a heart attack, Bell told the News.
The school is next scheduled to play on Friday, for a homecoming game against Voorhees.
“We’re just trying to be there for him, his family and for his friends”, said Coughlin, who plays softball and first met Murray when she was in seventh grade.
