Mirza-Hingis sail into women’s doubles final at Wimbledon

Hingis won the women’s doubles title at the All England Club with Jana Novotna 17 years ago, but she has never won the mixed doubles at Wimbledon.

With the win, Mirza inched closer to bag her first ever women’s doubles Grand Slam title.

In the first one, Mirza and Hingis broke their opponents twice out of four opportunities which was more than enough to seal the set in their favour. She wouldn’t win another Wimbledon title before retiring for the first time; in fact, she wouldn’t reach another final. Also, they dominated by taking 30 of the 46 points played in the set. She won Australian Open (2009) and French Open (2012) with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi and the US Open with Bruno Soares previous year.

Russia’s Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova will be the opponents for Hingis and Mirza after the second seeds beat Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. But as a doubles player, in both women’s and mixed tournaments, she still has a lot of game.

Mirza crunched a forehand to set up the break point, and then Hingis swatted away a volley to bring the decider back on serve.

They would face a tougher challenge against American duo of Mike Bryan and Bethanie Mattek-Sands, both highly experienced in title encounters at this level. In their second round match they gave up only two games.

Hingis and Mirza created an immediate break chance on the players’ return, and Hingis rifled a terrific forehand victor across court, leaving her to serve for the title.

Serena Williams will serve first in the Wimbledon final. Seeded seventh, the seasoned pair got out of the blocks early and took little time to brush aside the challenge of unseeded Polish-Russian combination of Marcin Matkowski and Elina Vesnina 6-2, 6-1. This match will be on court at 12:00 PM BST and 18:00 GMT and match date is fixed ups at Friday, 10 July 2015.

A victory on Saturday would put Williams three-fourths of the way to a calendar-year Grand Slam.
