Furniture Row Racing re-signs Truex, joins Toyota
The team also announced that Martin Truex Jr. would be staying for 2016 as well.
With the switch becoming official, FRR will become one of two Toyota-backed teams in the Sprint Cup garage with technical support coming from Joe Gibbs Racing by way of engines and chassis.
Truex is in his second year with Furniture Row and after an underwhelming 2014, rebounded to win a race, record seven top-fives, 17 top-10s and 536 laps led and earn a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup playoff. Truex and the team had expressed their desire to stay together for the upcoming season. Another big change for the team concerns manufacturer backing, as Chevrolet has confirmed they will not be returning to the team next season. However, things have turned around in the 2015 season and Truex won his third career race and made the Chase due to that win at Pocono.
Truex, who is in his second year with FRR, is among the 16 playoff drivers competing in the Chase for the Championship. “We’re look to step it up here even a little bit more”.
“It’s not just the place, it’s the people – especially this year”, he said. The first Chase run for the organization came in 2013 with Kurt Busch as the driver. “Being a single-car team that wants to expand, it’s going to help give us a few tools”.
“We thank Furniture Row Racing for all of the team’s hard work and accomplishments over the past decade, and we wish (owner) Barney Visser and his organization continued success with their future endeavors”, said Jim Campbell, Chevy’s vice president of performance vehicles and motorsports.
Garone said Chevrolet did not make a push to keep FRR.
“I think what they bring is another crew chief that can help solve problems”, Gibbs said.
