Segura’s homer lifts Lopez, Brewers to 4-3 win over Padres
Trailing 3-2 in the sixth, Segura put the Brewers back on top with his go-ahead two-run home run to left. Lopez (1-0), recently named the Brewers’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year, gave up three-earned runs in five innings while striking out seven for the win. He also had seven strikeouts in the game.
Tyson Ross’s final start of 2015 did not go the way anybody had hoped. Assistant general manager Gord Ash said catcher Martin Maldonado is not expected to play in Puerto Rico as he has in the past.
Still, after a big first season in the rotation in 2014 for the Padres, Ross showed that performance wasn’t an outlier by backing it up with another big season.
Segura, who doubled home a run in the first inning, hit a 363-foot drive off the second balcony of the Western Metal Supply Co. building in left to erase a 3-2 Padres lead. He probably would have tied the game when Justin Upton followed that with a double down the left field line, but it bounced into the stands and Kemp had to hold up at third. He’s issued 16 free passes over 23 2-3 innings in that span. Cashner has always been vulnerable to walks, but even his 2.8 walks per nine innings previously pales in comparison to the 6.1 figure in his last four.
Scooter Gennett led off the first with a single to right and moved into scoring position on a ground out. After a walk to Davis, Segura drove Lind home with a bad-hop double over the head of Padres third baseman Yangervis Solarte.
“I didn’t have a good rhythm early”, Ross said. “… It’s hard to find your tempo when you have guys on base”.
■ With an RBI in the third inning, Padres rightfielder Matt Kemp reached 100 RBI, making him the 14th player in franchise history to do so and the first since Chase Headley had 115 in 2012. After a rough first inning, he threw four scoreless innings and his offense got him ahead with a few timely hitting.
“If that ball stays on the field, Kemp scores and it might have been a different game”, said Murphy.
NOTES: Padres RF Matt Kemp departed Tuesday’s game with soreness in his right wrist shortly after driving in his 100th run of the season.
