Newborn killed after being thrown from 7th-story window in NYC

Police say charges against the child’s mother are pending. The New York City Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death, authorities said.

The 33-year-old, who reportedly denied being pregnant, allegedly told police she gave birth in the shower of her apartment. Sources say she hid the pregnancy from her boyfriend and family after telling them months ago that she had an abortion.

Officers were called to the building Monday afternoon, after the wife of the building’s superintendent found the baby’s body in a courtyard. The baby’s death was officially ruled a homicide, meaning she was alive when she plummeted from the window. “I can’t believe that someone would throw their own baby out the window”, said D. Joshua Charleston, a neighbor.

It wasn’t immediately clear how the newborn fell or was thrown.

Kenneth Bolton, 29, who was visiting relatives in the building when Berry was taken into custody, tells the New York Daily News that the mother “looked lost”. “He’s a good man”, she said. The infant girl was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

A surveillance video captured at least part of the baby’s fall.

New York Fire Department officials found the baby unconscious and unresponsive in the alleyway.

Police are investigating the incident and the woman who is believed to have birthed the child is now under police supervision at a local hospital.
