Rockies walk bases loaded, lose in 11th 4-3 to Diamondbacks
Walt Weiss might not be a self-promoter, but his two best players, Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez, will defend the work he’s done for the Rockies in 2015. “We haven’t been very good”, Arenado said.
Out with a thumb injury at the time, Phil Gosselin’s inclusion in the midseason trade that sent veteran pitcher Bronson Arroyo and pitching prospect Touki Toussaint to the Atlanta Braves may have been overlooked.
Gonzalez’s towering home run to right in the third was his 40th of the season, giving the Rockies multiple 40-home run hitters – Arenado has 41 – in a single season for the first time since Vinny Castilla, Larry Walker and Andres Galarraga accomplished the feat in 1997.
Brought in to pinch hit, Gosselin singled in the winning run after Colorado reliever Brooks Brown walked the bases loaded in the 11th as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Rockies 4-3 Tuesday night. Right fielder Ender Inciarte tripled and scored on a groundout in the third inning, and Peralta tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to tie the game at 3.
Scott Oberg came on in the sixth for the Rockies, facing the minimum after a strikeout of Goldschmidt and walk to Peralta, before getting Wellington Castillo to ground into a double play.
Robbie Ray yielded three runs (two earned) over six innings but got a no-decision as the Diamondbacks needed 11 innings to defeat the Rockies on Tuesday. Blackmon reached third base with no outs in the fifth but did not score, and second baseman DJ LeMahieu missed a bunt with runners on the corners in the eighth inning, causing Arenado to get caught off third for the second out of the inning. LeMahieu lined out to a diving Peralta to end the threat. Colorado took a 3-1 lead on the play, and it would’ve been more painful had Ray not picked off Reyes at first base during the CarGo at-bat. “We haven’t been very good”, Arenado said. Just trying to finish the season out strong, set the tone for next year. “… He’s showing you he wants to win every night, even if they aren’t the guys he wants”. – Phil Gosselin on his pinch-hit walkoff. He missed the past several days with a left Achilles injury….
Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss is finishing the penultimate year of his three-year, $2 million contract and hopes to keep his job.
Randall Delgado (7-4) pitched a scoreless top of the 11th for Arizona.
Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler and his wife Kristen became parents on Monday in Kansas City with the birth of daughter Lauryn Michelle.
