Theatre patron jumps on Broadway stage — to charge his cell phone
As it turns out, the outlet was only a prop and not operational.
An audience member tried to charge his iPhone in a fake, onstage outlet during a recent showing of Broadway’s Hand to God.
Security guards were not far behind and returned the audience member to his seat. The show was only delayed by five minutes. When he retrieved his phone, he is said to have asked “well, where can I charge it?”.
It remains unclear whether the brazen theater-goer was truly unaware of the consequences of his actions or perhaps was acting on a dare. Ushers at the Booth Theatre quickly converged, and the young man was pulled off the stage.
On Facebook, theatergoer Chris York posted his take on the stage faux pas: “At Hand to God tonight I watched an audience member climb onto the stage right before the show and plug his cell phone into a (fake) electrical outlet on the set. ON. THE”.
Fellow cast member Marc Kudisch also took to Twitter to let future audience members know that the electrical socket was not real, and was part of the set. Playwright Robert Askins’ bracing comedy mixes violence, swearing, brutal honesty, parental failure, church hypocrisy and plenty of sex.
A production spokesperson confirmed to Playbill.com that the incident occurred July 2.
