Kevin McCarthy Ribs John Boehner: ‘I Won’t Be as Tan’
The five-term California Republican moved aggressively to lock up support to move into Congress’ top job, second in line to the presidency.
But winning passage of a long-term spending bill or other sweeping measures would require Boehner to cooperate with congressional Democrats – and would spark a fresh fight with conservatives who have battered him at every turn of his five-year speakership. But, what fundamentally has to change is when you look across this country – and what’s being heard – we want to make sure that the people once again believe that this is their government, that they’re in charge, that we’re there to serve them.
“I would hope that Boehner would make it easier on the people who are going to follow him”, Reid said. “But that’s our mission”. Elections for the next House leadership will be held on Thursday, October 8 – a date outgoing Speaker John Boehner said he came to after consulting the Republican conference. In demurring Gowdy said he wanted to focus on the Benghazi committee and said: “I’ve never run for any leadership job”.
The discontent surfaced Tuesday in a short-lived campaign to draft Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., chairman of the special panel investigating the 2012 Benghazi, Libya, attacks, and Hillary Rodham Clinton.
According to reports, House Republicans will meet Tuesday to discuss leadership elections.
Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., a conservative who is not in the Freedom Caucus, said he doesn’t need a sit-down meeting to decide how he will vote. More chances for gridlock and shutdowns loom later this year.
Our conference has been through a lot together.
Consider this: Perhaps it is you and others like you who are the problem. If the Republicans are right on an issue and you are allegedly in control of both Houses, how is it the Republicans fault if the government shuts down? “The most important thing is to be willing to listen to them”. “There’s a generational difference between us as well”, he added later.
McCarthy has announced his candidacy for Speaker after Boehner announced that he is resigning as of the end of next month.
Price, Scalise’s leading opponent, released a letter saying: “The hurdles that inevitably lay ahead will require effective and capable leaders. And it must advance the cause of smaller, more limited, more accountable government by allowing everyone’s voice to be included”.
Former Rep. Steve LaTourette, a close friend of Boehner’s, said it’s too early to say whether the speaker will “go big, or whether he is satisfied with just keeping the government open”.
When asked if he agreed with Boehner, McCarthy would only say that he sees himself as a “team captain”, not a “manager”.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of Calif. smiles after finishing a speech about foreign policy, Monday, September 28, 2015, during the John Hay Initiative, at a hotel in Washington. He refused to back down from calling one of the tea party-styled leaders and presidential candidate, Sen. He had informed conservatives privately the day before that he would reject their demand to use a must-pass government-wide funding bill as a means to carry the battle against Planned Parenthood to President Barack Obama.
Conservative Republicans, a few of whom have called for his ouster, have insisted on punishing Planned Parenthood by denying funds over allegations that the non-profit group improperly sold tissue harvested from aborted fetuses. But McCarthy vowed to avoid another shutdown threat later this year when the temporary funding ends and the debt ceiling needs to be raised.
