Watch THE MARTIAN’s London Red Carpet Premiere; Ridley Scott Talks ALIEN
Based on the best-selling 2011 novel by Andy Weir, The Martian is an incredible and poignant story about humanity pushed to its absolute limits and is directed by Academy Award-nominated Ridley Scott, whose recent credentials include Robin Hood (2010), Prometheus (2012), and Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014). Luckily for The Martian, it does fit in with those, so that keeps its hopes very much alive… The journey to Mars continues with additional robotic missions planned for 2016 and 2020, and human missions in the 2030s. Damon’s Watney offers statements such as “I’m gonna have to science the shit out of this”, reminding the audience that science, and humor, can power his survival attempt. “It’s happening”, says Jessica Chastain.
Based on a book that took the science community by storm, “The Martian” (coming to theaters in the USA on October 2) represents the rare big budget sci-fi film that’s more sci than fi. And, he said, he was very happy that the film has a global focus as people from all backgrounds team together to rescue a Damon’s character. “No one should put their life in my hands; I couldn’t deal with the responsibility”. “He can build anything from scratch”. I don’t want to change people’s minds about anything.

I think it is one of the funniest moments of the book, and it didn’t make it into the movie. Only Mark Watney knows the feeling of being alone on Mars. Interstellar hadn’t come out yet, and I said, ‘Ridley, I’ve got to tell you, this is insane , but I do an unbilled cameo in Chris Nolan’s movie, Interstellar, and this is what it is’. “He would then start addressing it as though it was a friend”.
Of course, Damon wasn’t really alone on the $100 million movie as he microwaved spuds, patched holes in his temporary home and literally made it rain.
Damon says the project was a labor of love from the start.
A slot in the Oscar Race? The 2013 HBO hit, in which Michael Douglas and Damon star as Liberace and his longtime partner Scott Thorson, was adored by critics.
The Martian received exceedingly positive reviews during the 2015 Toronto Film Festival.
“Since the earliest days of cinema, movies have been inspired by stories of space and science, and in return films inspire people to stretch further and reach higher in pursuit of their dreams”. So I’d done these so many thousands of times, it was like a play I’d been doing for years. Luckily, he has worked with a few pretty good ones over a career pushing three decades: Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Paul Greengrass, Christopher Nolan, Steven Soderbergh, Steven Spielberg and Gus van Sant, to name a few. “I felt you actually touched Mars, especially with the 3D glasses with which you view the film”, S. Arunan, a senior ISRO scientist, said in a statement. And he said, ‘Well, this is a small part.
