Amazon Studios Orders Jack Ryan Original Series
So, Paramount didn’t have the franchise-igniting success they were hoping for with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (a worldwide gross of $135m from a budget of $60 million isn’t to be scoffed at, but it’s hardly series-launching money).
Deadline is reporting that Amazon has ordered Jack Ryan straight-to-series.
Last week, we reported that a new Jack Ryan TV series from producer Carlton Cuse (Lost), writer Graham Roland (The Returned), Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, Skydance TV, and Paramount TV had set off a bidding war. That follows Amazon’s recent decision to also give a series commitment to David E. Kelley’s The Trial with Billy Bob Thornton and Maria Bello. Jack Ryan has been featured in 11 Clancy novels, starting in 1984 with “The Hunt for Red October“.
The series will reportedly show Ryan “in his prime” as a Central Intelligence Agency operative, providing a new take from the films and using the various books from author Tom Clancy’s bibliography as a jumping off point. However, it will not be a direct adaptation and will transplant Jack Ryan to today’s world. Cuse at present is juggling three series, FX’s “The Strain“, A&E’s ” Bates Motel” and USA’s upcoming “Colony“.
Earlier this year, Paramount TV landed a development deal with Amazon Studios for a Galaxy Quest TV series.
