King Tut’s tomb reveals hints
Standing before the majestic gold, ocher and white frescoes of Tutankhamen’s tomb, British archaeologist Nicholas Reeves on Monday passionately defended his daring theory that Nefertiti is buried in a secret chamber.
El-Damaty said, “This indicates that the western and northern walls of Tutankhamen’s tomb could hide two burial chambers”.
In contrast to popular scholarship, which says that the painting located on the northern wall of Tutankhamun’s tomb shows king Ay doing the ritual for Tutankhamun – Dr Reeves believes that the picture depicts Tutankhamun himself completing a death ritual for Nefertiti.
He said high-resolution images revealed several very interesting features which look not at all natural.
Nefertiti actively supported her husband Akhenaten, the pharaoh who temporarily converted ancient Egypt to monotheism imposing the single cult of sun-god Aton.
American archaeologist Nicholas Reeves was the first to posit the existence of a secret chamber attached to King Tutankhamun’s tomb.
Then, when Queen Nefertiti passed away too, she was buried in a room adjacent to the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. “I came to the conclusion that an estimated 80 percent of the burial equipment had been made for somebody else, for a woman”, he said after the tomb visit.
After Nefertiti died, Tut was responsible for burying her, and then when he died someone chose to extend the tomb, Reeves suggested. They’ll announce what they find on November 4th, the anniversary of when Carter found King Tut’s tomb.
While inscriptions in tombs provide a few information, they are not always helpful in clarifying a pharaoh’s lineage. But they can’t just knock it down; they had to find another way to see through it. These features include ceilings, wall paintings, and the location of the magic bricks that contain amulets, which protect the deceased against the enemies of the god Osiris.
“The theory is a very good theory but it doesn’t mean it’s true”.
Reeves’s preliminary investigations suggest that Tut’s burial chamber was originally a corridor, as a line on the ceiling aligns perfectly with the faint outline of the walled up doorway.
Tut, Nefertiti, and Akhenaten’s family led Egypt during one of its most turbulent times that ended with a military takeover by Egypt’s top general at the time, Horemheb. Tourism at Red Sea beach resorts is rebounding after years of turmoil following the 2011 ouster of President Hosni Mubarak, said Zazou, but otherwise “tourism is suffering tremendously”.
