Sprint unlimited data plan set for $10 price hike

The nation’s fourth-largest wireless carrier said Wednesday that it would raise the price of its unlimited data plan by $10 to $70 a month.

Sprint announced today that it’s raising the price of its unlimited data plan with the change taking effect on October 16th, the price is going to be hiked by $10 so the plan’s new cost will be $70. T-Mobile US Inc (NYSE:TMUS)’s individual unlimited data plan is priced at $80 per month, whereas Verizon Communications Inc.

Sprint says current customers on the $60 plan will be able to remain on the plan even after the upgrade “as long as they still meet the plan requirements and are purchasing a phone option and financing option that is compatible with the plan”.

The unlimited data plan enables users to upload images, and stream videos without worrying about reaching a limit. Meaning, for the next two weeks a new Sprint customer could purchase the 16 GB iPhone 6s and unlimited service for $61 per month. “Rather than increase the price without warning, we want to give customers one last chance to take advantage of the $60 rate”. Sprint has consistently worked to lower its prices below those of the competition: previous year the carrier said it would offer services at half the price charged by market leaders AT&T and Verizon. The latest measure is an indication of the growing cost of offering as more users have started depending on their handsets.

Sprint claimed that the offering is still better than the deals offered by its competitors. USA data traffic over wireless networks has increased 947 percent between 2010 and 2014, according to the CTIA wireless trade association.
