Hoax: DNR not asking for removal of deer ornaments

The letter claims the DNR is asking for removal of the ornaments because it throws off numbers in the state-wide deer count.

It was not immediately clear who wrote the letter, which directs residents to “Act NOW!” but the culprit used the department’s letterhead and signed it as department’s deputy secretary, Kurt Thiede.

“Hoax?? I thought it was a amusing, well written letter attempting to explain how the DNR thinks there are so many deer in the woods, yet hunters are not seeing them…..I love it!”

According to Jim Dick, DNR spokesperson, the organization did, in fact, have nothing to do with the letter, and were only made aware of it thanks to an anonymous messenger.

The announcement, which the agency titled “DISPELLING A HOAX” (their caps, not ours), comes after the circulation of a rather official-looking letter telling residents their fake lawn deer were getting confused for real ones.

The DNR also took to their Facebook page to quell rumors. “It was not crafted, nor distributed by [the Department of Natural Resources]”, the post on Tuesday said.

The comment section lit up shortly afterward.

A hoax is going around Wisconsin the old-fashioned way: In the mail.
