Marine killed in hit-and-run after stopping to help disabled motorist in Maryland
A Marine was killed in a hit-and-run as he tried to help another motorist who was stopped in heavy downpours in Frederick County.
Police are looking for the driver of a truck that struck and killed a man who had pulled over to help a disabled vehicle in Tuesday night’s rain. The accident on northbound Route15 just north of Auburn Road near Thurmont, Maryland.
Col. Benjamin Watson, commander of the Marine Corps Barracks in Washington, said Camp David guard Cpl.
Ferrell was stationed at the Naval Support Facility in Thurmont, Maryland.
The driver of the vehicle did not stop. During that time, a truck towing a car-hauling trailer traveled off the roadway onto the shoulder and struck Ferrell and his truck.
Witnesses told troopers at the scene that the vehicle briefly stopped north of the crash, but the driver then drove from the scene without speaking with anyone.
Investigators say they believe the tractor trailer sustained heavy damage to its front right side.
The incident remains under investigation.
