The new rankings take into account the European Championship qualifiers in September, which ensured 2010 world champion Spain was back into the top 10 in sixth place after two wins.

Congo experienced a disappointing drop from 42nd to 49th position in the world, allowing Cape Verde (41) and Cameroon (48) to pass them in the ranking, leaving the Congolese in eighth position in the African rankings.

Wales won in Cyprus before a home draw with Israel brought them closer to qualification for their first major tournament since 1958. Scotland have slipped nine places into 40th, while the Republic of Ireland are down three into 54th. Michael O’Neill’s side are on the cusp of securing their place at Euro 2016 after beating the Faroe Islands and drawing with Hungary last month.

Northern Ireland rise six places to 35th.

Argentina and Germany have also maintained the first and second positions whiles Belgium and Portugal rest on the third and fourth positions respectively.

Liberia climbed more places than any other nation, shooting up 65 places to claim a spot in the top 100 – at 95.
