Verizon Launches go90 App for iOS, Android
Comcast and Verizon are the latest comms outfits to pile into video streaming – Comcast with its standalone Watchable service, and Verizon with its OTT streaming app go90.
As for what content you should expect to see, Verizon just signed a partnership with Univision bringing a bit of its content to the service, as well as MTV, Comedy Central, AOL, HuffPost Live, and much more. While go90 appears to have a few good partners at launch, you can probably find a lot of that content on YouTube, too.
The service now has around more than 8,000 titles and 35 Go90 exclusive shows. AwesomenessTV, for example, is producing a daily live show called Top Five Live hosted by Hunter March and Michelle Phan’s Icon Network plans to stream three beauty and lifestyle shows exclusively on the app. Eventually, go90 will also stream live college football and basketball games. The company said the content available in the go90 beta was about a tenth of the launch library. “Plus many of our Watchable partners have not traditionally had distribution on the TV and we can give them a path to reach new audiences and further monetise their content on the biggest screen in the home”.
During CTIA Super Mobility Week in September, Verizon said it had purposefully left the Verizon name out of the branding for Go90 and focused on created a community experience by building the service out of short clips which can easily be customized and shared across major social media platforms.
Go90 had been available for testing, but Thursday’s news signals its wide launch for iOS and Android devices. Dish went on to launch Sling TV, a $20 a month subscription that offers live television programming from partners including ESPN and Food Network alongside short-form content from Maker Studios.
