Popular Florida bald eagle featured in live webcam dies
He became an internet sensation in 2012, when a family in Fort Myers, Florida, set up a webcam to document his loving relationship with Harriet. I’m devastated about Ozzie, and I’m scared and so sad for Harriet. Presumably, they engaged in conventional eagle activities: eating fish, tending to a nest, gliding majestically. The two are believed to be about 25 years old. The Pritchetts, a family of avid eagle-watchers, wanted to share their feathered tenants with other amateur ornithologists.
More than 3,822 notes of condolence had been posted as of Thursday afternoon on the eagle cam Facebook page.
Ozzie’s life came to an abrupt end Tuesday evening in a manner ripe for Shakespearean tragedy.
“We would like to thank everyone for their support and unwavering belief in CROW during Ozzie’s rehabilitation and recent stay”, the Facebook post stated.
Ozzie collapsed Sunday of septic shock from his wounds, said Heather Barron, the avian medical specialist and surgeon who treated Ozzie at the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) on Sanibel Island near Fort Myers on Florida’s southwest coast. It has also been reported the bird had a nasty run-in with barbwire. He was such a strong Eagle.
Ozzie’s death has complicated that ideal. Bald eagles typically mate for life but will mate with another eagle if their partner dies or is missing.
On Sunday, September 27, representatives from the Eagle Cam confirmed were contacted by CROW in regards to an adult male eagle who was found in North Fort Myers earlier that day.
One half of Florida’s famous bald eagle couple has died. Ozzie and Harriet have raised dozens of eaglets and celebrated many other milestones together, but the events of this summer proved that even the greatest romances can err in the face of temptation.
Ozzie was also badly injured in March, possibly by a auto, and had to spend three months in care with CROW.
