Sheriff: Man Shot & Killed By Deputy In Mora
Authorities have released the name of a Duluth man who was fatally shot by a Kanabec County sheriff’s deputy outside a home in Mora.
“We’re trying to figure out why this all happened”, Smith told news media at the scene.
An acquaintance of the homeowner helped secure the man and he was pronounced dead shortly after paramedics arrived. The officer came out of the front door of the home as the man was getting out of the auto. She drew her weapon and ordered the subject to get on the ground, but he ignored the orders and attacked the deputy, repeatedly punching her in the head. McIalwain has been placed on administrative leave, which is routine. He says the deputy then shot the suspect.
The deputy fired her weapon, striking the suspect, who died at the scene.
McIalwain, who has been with the Kanabec County Sheriff’s Office for 1-1/2 years, was treated for injuries to her forehead and arm.
The man’s body has been taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy and positive identification.
Mora is about 70 miles north of the Twin Cities.
