Ukrainian president Petro Porshenko tells United Nations not to trust

Poroshenko also proposed the convening of a special session of the UN General Assembly dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster.

Kiev and pro-Russian insurgents have agreed to withdraw their entire arsenal of smaller weapons from the buffer zone dividing rebel-held lands from the rest of Ukraine.

Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko on Tuesday blasted Russia’s “unprovoked aggression” against his country and called on the United Nations to find a way to enforce justice when violations are perpetrated by its most powerful members.

The OSCE will monitor the withdrawal of the weapons, Sajdik said.

“However, this is not enough”, he added.

“The question asked earlier about … how they present things and the lies about their presence in Ukraine and the training, I mean, you know, it’s stunning but it has an impact in places where it isn’t countered”, he said.

“We knew that this case would be a disgrace, and it is proving to be a disgrace right from the start”, defence lawyer Ilya Novikov said outside the court, accusing the investigators of “slapping together a fake case”.

Both the rebel leaders and Kiev hailed the deal’s signature and vowed to implement its terms.

Andrei Lysenko, a Ukrainian military spokesman, said talking about the end of the war was premature, but said Ukraine hopes to see an end to hostilities in the near future.

Donetsk separatist leader Alexander Zakharchenko called the bitter enemies’ ability to reach a compromise after almost four months of acrimonious negotiations “undisputed progress”.

As Putin spoke Monday, Ukrainians protested Russian activities, flying blue-and-yellow Ukrainian flags outside of the United Nations compound on Manhattan’s east side. “Putin’s involvement in Syria is a way to seek concessions, to get the West to avoid talking about Crimea, drop sanctions and accept a frozen conflict in eastern Ukraine”.

“Russia wants the Donbass to be Russian-controlled, not integrated into any administrative structures but still a tool to influence Ukrainian central decision making”. EU sanctions and a subsequent Russian embargo have hurt many European companies.

However the warring sides have yet to find a lasting political solution to the crisis that plunged relations between Moscow and the West to their worst levels since the Cold War.

Mr Poroshenko’s remarks appear especially prescient given recent Russian military air strikes in northern Syria – performed with the express permission of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, who has been waging war on his own people for more than four years.
