The Future Of The United States Immigrant Population In One Graphic
“Without the immigrants, the US population would start decreasing”, said Pew demographer Jeff Passel, according to Reuters. Still, the US has by far the worlds largest immigrant population, holding about one-in-five of the worlds immigrants, says the report.
Hispanics will rise to 24 percent of the total United States population, whereas the increasing number of Asian immigrants will raise their total to only 14 percent of the entire US population. That law abolished a quota system based on national origin, which had barred most immigrants from outside of western Europe and led to a sharp increase in immigration from Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Asians will become the largest immigrant group in the United States by 2055, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center.
And in 50 years, foreign-born individuals and their children will comprise 36 per cent of the population – higher than levels at the beginning of the 20th century which saw an influx of Irish, Italian and Polish immigrants.
The survey also noted that Caucasians will only compose less than 50 percent of the country’s population in the next 40 years.
The survey found that 59% of Americans said immigrants, overall, were not learning English in a reasonable amount of time.
On crime, by contrast, just 7 percent say immigrants are making things better, while 41 percent generally see no positive or negative impact of immigrants in the USA on crime.
Last Sunday, USA secretary John Kerry announced 85,000 refugees would be accepted into the nation next year.
“We have seen the United States change its immigration laws before”. The foreign-born population represents a growing share of the electorate that Democrats and Republicans court because that voting bloc is big enough to tip presidential elections. Since so many immigrants in our country today have come here illegally (an estimated 11 to 12 million of them), many of these may have avoided census takers out of fear of being deported, resulting in the immigrant population being undercounted.
Almost half of American adults, 47 percent, said immigrants from Asia have had a mostly positive effect on American society. However, about the same percentage of people said immigrants were improving the food, music and arts scene in the country.
About 50 percent of those surveyed generally view immigrants as good for the country’s economy although they also believe that many of them are also engaged in illegal activities.
Released on Monday, the analysis of the American think tank presents some interesting predictions, such as the fact that over the next half century, the US will become such a varied mix of ethnicities and races that not one of them will claim majority. That figure went up to 6 percent in 2015 and expected to be 14 percent by 2065.
