Childish Gambino booed offstage in Aus
Childish Gambino (i am donald) covers one of his fav R&B classics, TAMIA’s “So Into You” for Like A Version.
This triple j performance follows a disastrous one for Gambino, who was booed by Aussie fans at his Listen Out sideshow at Newcastle’s Cambridge Hotel last night, with a few concertgoers taking to social media to call his brief performance “unprofessional” and “very disappointing”.
The rapper, actor and comedian otherwise known as Community’s Donald Glover kicked things off with a pleasingly decompressed take of his falsetto driven hit Sober, itself given the shuffling indie rock treatment on the segment a few months ago courtesy of an Adelaide supergroup led by Jesse Davidson.
Despite eventually coming out from behind the decks to perform a few of his tracks, Glover had already lost the crowd who began to boo.
Neither The Cambridge Hotel or the promoters of the show, Big Apachee, have commented on the gig.
Gambino finally took the microphone around 40 minutes into the show, but his set ended with audience members chanting obscenities.
They claimed they were “disappointed” and claimed they had “said something on the night but unfortunately nothing changed”.
‘… we aim to bring the best possible acts to Newcastle for music lovers.
‘For those that aren’t aware, Canberra and ourselves were 2 additional Childish Gambino shows that were promoted in the exact same way as part of his current tour and we were extremely excited to be presented with this opportunity.
“We jumped at the chance to. present Childish Gambino to Newcastle in an intimate gig… he didn’t deliver on what was billed and expected by everyone, including us”.
Following the controversy, Glover has cancelled a similar performance scheduled at Canberra’s Academy Club for Friday (October 2).
