Obama on Oregon shooting: ‘We’ve become numb to this’
And he freely admitted it. “Somehow this has become routine”. This reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine… we’ve become numb to this. “We have become numb to this”, he complained.
“That will require a change in politics on this issue”, Obama said.
Here we are again: Another massacre, another discussion about gun control-not about instituting new gun controls, mind you, but about why such new regulations are nearly certainly dead on arrival.
Former Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) said on Friday that Americans are tiring of President Obama’s calls for gun control in the wake of recent mass shootings.
We are not the only country with people with mental illnesses who want to do harm to other people.
Tony added that if you’re on a college campus without a way to defend yourself, then shame on you. Maybe because he was politically savvy enough to realize that whenever we do know, someone could point out that, well, that law you suggest wouldn’t have actually stopped this. Illegal. Do we need more laws on the books that will be ignored by people who, by definition, do not respect the law? “Don’t we have the power to stop this?” “They’re using cheap hand guns”.
“There’s been another mass shooting in America”, Obama said. Let’s take the president up on his challenge. He is perfectly convinced by his own zeal for collective justice.
“Of course, what’s also routine is that somebody, somewhere, will comment and say, ‘Obama politicised this issue.’ Well, this is something we should politicise”.
Obama said a “change of politics” was needed in America to overhaul gun laws because “thoughts and prayers” were not enough.
For context, media folks reminded us of the unforgettable, high profile shootings that have taken place over the past few months, hinting of a problem that has grown out of control.
Oh, and pass more gun laws.
I have been held at gunpoint twice in my life. One was a case of mistaken identity.
I wonder. Guns have always been available.
The impact of using the word “pretends” in that context would be monumental (or even “purports” for that matter); gun advocates, lobbyists, and elected officials alike would drag the President through the mud for the rest of his term over this statement. And this is not something I can do by myself. Great Britain. Australia. Countries like ours.
In 2015 in the US, terror attacks resulted in the deaths of at least seven people, three of them perpetrators or would-be perpetrators.
But the pain of her passing still lives within me. It’s still fresh, and it will never seem fair.
Right now, I can imagine the press release is being cranked out.
I don’t know what law could have stopped this from happening, and thus cannot argue in good faith that none could.
Suffering is, unfortunately, part of our worthwhile struggle to live. We have got to face up to the fact – people are not safe. We collectively are answerable to those families who lose their loved ones because of our inaction…
