Thirteen weapons recovered from US gunman
Authorities investigating a deadly mass shooting at an Oregon community college say they have found a number of firearms at the gunman’s apartment.
Nunez said that all the weapons were purchased legally, and the ATF is in the process of tracing them to the different federal firearms dealers where the shooter purchased the guns. She says investigators also found a flak jacket next to a rifle at the school, which contained steel plates.
Even though Douglas County (Oregon) Sheriff John Hanlin did not release the name of the shooter, but it has been reported that Chris Harper Mercer, 26, was responsible for the massacre.
He also had a.40-caliber Taurus pistol traced to someone in Portland and a.556-caliber Del-Ton.
Authorities are still not providing a motive for America’s latest mass killing, which also left nine people wounded.
Students said Mercer said “I’ve been waiting to do this for years”, then shot the teacher point blank.
He isn’t believed to have a criminal history.
Mercer reloaded and asked students if they were Christian before shooting them.
Police killed Mercer during a firefight with law enforcement officials who had rushed onto the college campus after 91 calls had been made about the shooting.
The officials said he lamented the fact that he had no girlfriend.
One weapon was registered to another person, according to officials. He had recently moved to nearby Winchester, Oregon, from Torrence, California.
Umpqua Community College will remain closed until at least Monday.
Hanlin also did not identify any of the victims Friday, saying family notifications still needed to be made.
Brown said more must be done to prevent bloodshed but that “today is not the day”.
Senator Ron Wyden echoed Brown’s comments, adding “it is clear that it does have to be about more than words if we want this carnage to end”.
