4 injured in gas explosion at Miami-area high-rise

A few type of explosion has blown out a portion of the top of a tall residential building in Sunny Isles Beach in northeast Miami-Dade County, according to media reports.

The explosion happened before noon Friday, and multiple units responded to the scene. Two firefighters also were hurt.

Several people were transported to a local hospital with severe burns.

Nuria Serrano, public information officer for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, says four people were taken to hospitals.

CBS Miami’s chopper was over the scene as a section of the top of the building could be seen apparently collapsed near a room that looked like a boiler room. “There was water going everywhere”. They have not yet said when it will reopen.

A construction worker who was working in another area of the building said he heard two explosions. “It got your heart racing”.

Collins Avenue was closed between 172nd Street and 178th Street as a result of the incident. The building, still under construction, offers condos ranging from 1,500 square feet to 9,000 square feet, according to the developer’s website.
