Android TV gets new apps from HBO, Showtime, CBS, Disney and more
Disney Movies Anywhere, UFC and WWE Network, have been added to the Android TV app store.
Of course, there are still a few notable standouts from the list such as HBO GO and Vudu. At the same time, the availability of the newly-added apps varies depending on device. Whether Android TV is baked directly into your HDTV or you own a set-top box powered by the living room OS, you can access this content via the Google Play app.
As we mentioned with the NVIDIA SHIELD update earlier this week, the number of Android TV apps has risen to over 1,000 now, although reminiscent of the Android tablet app dilemma there are only a bit over 50 in Google’s curated list.
Plus, with the addition of HBO NOW, Android TV has actually beaten leading streaming player Roku to offering access to HBO’s programming over-the-top.
In other words, Android TV now comes as build-in software in Sony, Sharp, Philips, Hisense and TLC smart TVs, the Nexus Player from Google, or gaming-centric streaming boxes from Razer and Nvidia. Still, Android TV sits in the awkward position of beingoutperformed by its cheaper, easier-to-use companion, the Chromecast. Google says it’scommitted to both platforms. At present, it’s available on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, in terms of living room devices.
