NCAA bans SMU from postseason, suspends Larry Brown
“So when the question was proposed to me, I was kind of surprised”.
The specifics of Brown’s involvement in this latest violation remain a bit unclear (it could involve otherwise ineligible players miraculously becoming eligible), but as the head coach and face of the hoops world at SMU, the responsibility ultimately lies with him.
For his part, Brown in his later press conference noted that he also has no plans to resign any time soon. Upon further investigation, the report notes that “he initially lied about the underlying violations when interviewed by the enforcement staff”.
The golf team, meanwhile, committed recruiting violations, the NCAA said.
SMU’s roster for this year included stars returning from last year’s strong season, such as Nic Moore, Markus Kennedy, and Keith Frazier. “As this particular case certainly underlines, however, individuals, if they choose to violate rules, can choose to do so, ” Turner said. That duty incudes helping our young men develop into people of character and to ensuring that we pursue our goals with integrity. “As we consider an appeal, we are particularly concerned about sanctions that are punitive against student-athletes who were not involved in the infractions”. In 1988, Brown was found to have committed recruiting violations at Kansas, causing the Jayhawks to receive a one-year postseason ban the season after they won the NCAA tournament title.
Student Lori Landes says, “I just wonder why they’re picking on SMU”.
Though the NCAA said that Brown had “no direct knowledge” of the assistant coach completing the player’s homework, it said he failed to handle the situation appropriately.
“…failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance within his program”.
The NCAA report said Maligi encouraged Frazier to enroll in an online course needed to gain academic entry. He then was asked, “You didn’t order her to do that?” and said, “Absolutely not”. Brown has been charged with lack of head coach control and suspended for the first nine games of the season, per ESPN. SMU looks like a potential top 25 team so the school will likely appeal the ban in an effort to play in the 2016 postseason. Maligi took a leave of absence in the middle of last season and reportedly refused to cooperate with investigators. “I have nothing to be ashamed of in any of those cases”. I truly believe that our program has dedicated itself unwaveringly to the ideals of academic integrity and NCAA compliance.
Brown told reporters he has no plans on resigning and he has “a lot of kids in that locker room that count on me”.
