Cleveland Browns to start Josh McCown
Browns starting quarterback, Josh McCown suffered a concussion in the closing minutes of the second quarter last week on a diving attempt on the goal line.
While it would be nice to see if “Manziel Mania” is justified, it’s important to remember that the Cleveland Browns aren’t in the position to hang all of its hope on Johnny’s potential. McCown was given the “all clear” Wednesday, and Coach Mike Pettine chose to trust his gut and go with the experienced starter.
The Browns will start quarterback Josh McCown instead of Johnny Manziel on Sunday when they host the Oakland Raiders, the team announced Wednesday morning in a news release. That knowledge is part of the reason the Browns have elected to go with McCown on Sunday and seat Manziel once again.
If McCown can pass concussion protocol this week, which according to Cabot looks promising, head coach Mike Pettine may decide that the patience and savvy that Armour witnessed Manziel have on Sunday may be better served on the sideline rather than the field. Pettine stated that McCown gives them the best chance to win and Manziel made it clear he was not thrilled over the call. Cleveland was outgained by Tennessee 385-274, but the Browns forced three turnovers in the win. “I’m all right going through the day”. We’re just not so sure it will end up being a good thing if he is out there. “We have to get that cleaned up”.
The Browns said that McCown will start, but the Raiders will spend time preparing for him and Manziel during this practice week.
The Cleveland Browns are only two weeks into another season, and there’s already a quarterback controversy, thanks to the improved play from Johnny Manziel. We now feel that we have a backup that can come in and he’s already proven that he can move the team and makes plays and win games for us. Cleveland ran the ball a lot with Manziel at the helm, but Manziel flashed some very good things, including 60- and 50-yard touchdown passes to Travis Benjamin.
Facing the Browns, Mariota had 21 completions for 257 yards and two touchdowns, but was sacked seven times. “Based off of the success and the steps that Derek took last year and where he’s progressing this year, it makes us even more excited to have Flip here”.
“When he went in last week and started, I thought he did a great job”, Carr said.
“I think that factors in a little bit, but Josh had built a volume of reps and has the experience and had had the job”, Pettine said.
Manziel’s performance was personally satisfying for the former Heisman Trophy victor, whose bad rookie season was followed by a stint in rehab.
“That can not become his flaw”, Pettine said. “But we’ll have the “what-if” discussion [Monday night], and we’ll see where that takes us”.
