De Blasio, after hit from Cuomo, does not back down
The past couple of weeks have been tense once between the two Democrats and there is no sign of improvement.
“I think it had to be said and I think it’s important to make clear to the people of this city who are depending on me to produce for them what’s really going on in Albany, what’s really going on in Washington”, de Blasio said regarding his remarks about Cuomo.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is not backing down in his ongoing feud with Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
“I personally am trying to lose weight so I’m staying away from pasta but I do appreciate the good will offer”, de Blasio said at an unrelated press conference in Sheepshead Bay. “The Albany status quo has not served the people of New York City”.
Rebuking Mr. Cuomo for implying that the mayor doesn’t understand the struggle of working with a Republican State Senate, Mr.de Blasio, a fellow Democrat, insisted he can “work with anyone”.
Even as Cuomo repeatedly blocked portions of de Blasio’s agenda, the two men have touted their decades-long friendship.
He accuses Cuomo of holding a vendetta against those who disagree with him and claims the governor didn’t help New York City during the state’s most recent legislative session.
De Blasio said he meant to make it known that he believes the governor’s statements were politically motivated.
But de Blasio acknowledged Thursday, in his first public event since returning the night before, that he met with the mayors of Flagstaff, Arizona and Albuquerque, New Mexico. The mayor on Thursday did not apologize for his unusual public criticisms of the governor.
“My most illustrious predecessor Fiorello La Guardia didn’t bite his tongue”.
On Thursday, Cuomo celebrated the same legislative session that left de Blasio fuming, saying, “There was more money for education than ever before, more money for affordable housing… we did a great rent-reform bill”. “I’ll call them as I see them because my job is to fight for the people of New York City”.
He described himself as a consensus-building politician in contrast to the mayor, able to work across the aisle.
“How can anyone expect us to do this work when we have such a threat hanging over our head – and for no reason!”
Mayor de Blasio and Gov. Cuomo were both at the U.S. women’s soccer team World Cup victory parade Friday – but they didn’t cross paths.
