Finally, miscarriage cards that say exactly the right thing
Dr. Jessica Zucker, a psychologist specializing in women’s reproductive and maternal mental health, had long worked with women who’d experienced these types of loss before experiencing it herself with a 16-week miscarriage.
The issue became deeply personal for her when she tragically miscarried at 16 weeks in 2012. With her empathy cards, Zucker hopes to “normalize this enormous statistic that really isn’t going to go away anytime soon”. In such a situation friends do not know what to say, and well-meaning sympathy cards failed to reflect the breadth of emotions she felt.
Last year, in an article written for The New York Times, Zucker denounced the stigma of miscarriage and said that the word “miscarriage” is used to avoid referring to the actual heartbreak involved.
“Zucker’s goal in creating these cards (one of which says “#f***LOSS”, for example) was to shift the cultural conversation surrounding this heartbreaking yet not uncommon event.
As a result, Zucker was inspired to create a line of sympathy cards aimed at those who have suffered a pregnancy loss at any stage.
These cards are being sold at Zucker’s website for $4.50 each. Also, a pack of 10 cards is available for $38 and you can find them in selected stores in Los Angeles, California.
These sympathy cards, according to Zucker, are an “antidote” for friends and family who often express the same sentiment: “I just didn’t know what to say”.
“My vision was that it would help people feel less alone, and show the world in general how frequently this is happening”. “Women are reporting feeling a sense of shame, self blame, guilt and definitely isolation after experiences of pregnancy and infant loss”.
