Weights: Adrien Broner 138½, Khabib Allakhverdiev 139
At the weigh in, then on fight night, he will see, and we will know, if the new Adrien Broner talk is just that, or a reality which I would applaud.
Broner has nearly every imaginable advantage over the 32-year-old Allakhverdiev in their fight on Showtime Championship Boxing from the U.S Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio. The fight can be seen live on Showtime at 10 p.m.
Read on for a preview and a prediction.
He has since claimed that he has changed and has settled into the junior welterweight division, but he will be facing a tough veteran in Khabib Allakhverdiev.
Now, it appears that Adrien Broner gets it, understands that he can come off as those things, and he’s seeking to change his ways.
Khabib’s solid chin will allow him to take Broner’s best shots.
Stafford assesses that “if we’d had one more round in each of those fights, we wouldn’t be talking like this”, because Broner knocked Porter down in the 12th round of their bout. “On Saturday night, I will show the fans a great fight and come out with the victory”.
Broner should win by decision, but Allakhverdiev is experienced enough to give Broner a decent fight.
You can make an argument that the following light welterweights are much better fighters than Allakhverdiev: Lucas Matthysse, Viktor Postol, Amir Iman, Jose Benavidez, Chris Algieri, Terence Crawford, Thomas Dulorme, Ruslan Provodnikov, Humberto Soto, Antonio Orozco, Felix Diaz, Omar Figueroa, Lamont Peterson, Mauricio Herrera, Jack Catterall, Cesar Cuenca, and John Molina. “Once we get in the ring its all about business”.
Broner is a highly skilled, versatile boxer-puncher with deep amateur pedigree (300-19-1 before going pro).
Cherry, however, will be facing a young and hungry Puerto Rican title contender Jose Pedraza.
“I’m excited to be back in Cincinnati taking on a tough world class fighter who is going to bring it”, said Broner, who has held world titles at 130, 135 and 147 pounds.
“After the third or fourth round, I can see it being a brawl. It’s a huge deal to have the chance to be a four-division world champion at 26 years old”. “I have a good strategy for the fight and if it works, I will win by knockout”.
The schedule is late, but let me make it up to you with this picture Sylvester Stallone painted of what he thought Rocky would look like “in an emotional sense”.
I tell people that I am so glad that I didnt win that title against Bradley because, in my mind, I wouldve been fighting at 140, but that wasnt my weight class. I wouldve been risking my life fighting at 140. But it is an even better bounce-back opportunity for Broner, with a game opponent who does everything pretty well but nothing exceptionally, and will stand in front of “The Problem” and eat leather.
If he doesn’t beat Khabib Allakhverdiev in their 12-round fight for the vacant WBA super lightweight title, Broner becomes nothing more than a talented underachiever, a Floyd Mayweather wannabe who’ll have run out of excuses for failing to win when he was matched against championship-caliber opponents. In the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING co-feature, undefeated IBF Junior Lightweight World Champion Jose Pedraza (20-0, 12 KOs) will defend his title against former world title challenger Edner Cherry (24-6-2, 19 KOs).
