“From what I heard, like 15 people were in the elevator”, Herlang said.
The elevator stalled with the doors open.
The building is relatively new; there were no outstanding construction projects and no work going on with the elevator, authorities say.
However, witnesses claim the elevator simply dropped while Moran was inside it. “As it went down, he tried to jump out because the doors were still open, and it shot straight up”.
However, the elevator then suddenly jerked three feet downwards, giving the Israel native severe wounds on his head and chest.
Residents of the building were shocked.
It is unclear what caused the elevator to malfunction. Hurling said the elevator has monthly maintenance.
A man has suffered a grisly death after trying to exit a jammed lift in a luxury New York apartment building the exact moment it started to drop. The investigation is ongoing.
“There’s so many backup safeties to the elevator, I don’t understand why something like that happens”, George Hurling, who is with the company that maintains the elevator, told 1010 WINS’ Roger Stern.
After those complaints were filed, an inspection in January 2013 by DOB’s elevator division found no violations, according to the DOB.
